The works for the Campolattaro dam in the province of Benevento were inaugurated this morning, a strategic project designed to change the face of water management in Campania. When completed, the facility will make it possible to fully exploit the waters of the reservoir, one of the largest in the Centre-South, with a useful capacity of over 100 million cubic metres.
The intervention, with a total value of around €740 million, involves the use of resources for drinking, irrigation and energy purposes. The water system will directly serve 26 municipalities in the province of Benevento – around 130 000 inhabitants – but above all it will connect to the primary supply network that supplies over 2.5 million people in four provinces in Campania (Naples, Benevento, Salerno and Caserta).
The work will also have a decisive impact on the agricultural sector: around 15 000 hectares of land in Valle Telesina and Sannio will be able to count on a regular and safe distribution of water for irrigation. In addition, the new hydropower plants will produce energy of 18,000 MWh per year, contributing to the sustainability of the project.
The yard was organised in three lots, with a first conclusion expected by 2026 for the part financed by the RRP and the total completion by 2027.
For the Campania Region, this is a work of historic importance: the long-awaited Campolattaro dam will not only provide drinking water for millions of citizens, but will also strengthen the water security of the territory, ensuring fundamental resources for both communities and the local agricultural economy.
