A visit to the station took place this morning. Monte Sant’Angelo the new Line 7 of the Naples Metro, an infrastructure destined to become a symbol of regional public transport and at the same time a work of contemporary art. The station, built with Cohesion Funds on behalf of EAV (Autonomous Volturno Organization), implementing entity of the Campania Region, It will be enriched by the monumental sculptures of the internationally renowned artist. Anish Kapoor, present at the meeting this morning.

The official opening of the station is expected by 2025, at the end of the last checks necessary for the commissioning of the first section of Line 7, between Soccavo and Monte Sant’Angelo.

The new station is located in Fuorigrotta, with two main accesses: one within the university campus of Federico II and the other in the Rione Traiano district. Both entrances are characterised by monumental sculptures by Kapoor, which recall the myth of the Cumaean Sibyl and transform the entrance of passengers into a visual metaphor for the descent into the cave cavern.

A distinctive feature of the work is the colossal installation of 19 metres high and 220 tonnes located in the university area, which incorporates the escalators accompanying travellers inside the station. The exit towards Rione Traiano is also marked by a sculptural ‘mouth’, 11 metres high and weighing 42 tonnes. The underground spaces, clad in spritz-beton, are designed to evoke a natural and mythological environment. The connection between the railway area and the entrances will be provided by escalators and inclined lifts, a reminder of the city funiculars.

With the opening of the Monte Sant’Angelo station and the first section of the Line 7, the Campania Region takes another step in strengthening sustainable mobility. The so-called ‘Bretella di Monte Sant’Angelo’ will make it possible to connect the western area of Naples with the centre and the Flegrean area, thanks to the interchange at the Montesanto junction between Circumflegrea and Cumana. Further connections with Line 2, Line 1 and the funicular will also be possible, thus expanding the integration of the regional metro system.

The new line, which benefits from a total investment of 390 million euros, will extend for about 4.5 km completely underground, connecting the station of Soccavo (Circumflegrea) with the station Mostra (Cumana). In addition to Monte Sant’Angelo, three other new stops are planned: the São Paulo Park (opening in 2027), Terracina (2029) and the station Mediterranean Games, which will allow direct interchange with Line 6.
