The demographic challenge, together with the related phenomena of population depopulation and ageing, is one of the most serious threats to the European Union and, in particular, to Italy.
These processes undermine the competitiveness and resilience of member countries, amplify territorial inequalities and create difficulties in the availability of labour, in the sustainability of social and welfare systems, and in access to essential services. In particular, the Inner Areas are facing more acute problems, as they are more exposed to phenomena such as strong depopulation, an ageing population and a lack of services.
To effectively address these challenges, the National Strategy for Internal Areas (SNAI) is a crucial tool, through the improvement of essential services, the promotion of economic and social growth and the enhancement of local resources to create opportunities for development. The National Strategic Plan for Internal Areas (PSNAI), in particular, provides guidelines for implementing targeted interventions that respond to the specificities of each territory and promote the well-being of people, in compliance with the principles of subsidiarity, partnership and multilevel governance, through the harmonisation of existing resources and regulations.
In this context, the Campania Region has selected seven target areas involving 143 municipalities: Alto Matese (17), Tammaro-Titerno (24), Comunità Montana Fortore (14), Alta Irpinia (25), Sele-Tanagro-Alburni (19), Cilento Interno (29), Vallo di Diano (15).
