The 54th edition of the Giffoni Film Festival kicks off. The event was inaugurated by the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, who this year is also the main funder of the initiative, through the resources of the European cohesion policy.

"It would have been a crime to interrupt an event like that of Giffoni," said President De Luca, "for 54 years, beyond the content that concerns film productions, Giffoni is an event that speaks of solidarity, that speaks of young generations, that speaks of relations of friendship between all the countries of the world, that speaks of future and hope. So it was unthinkable that this event would stop.”

President De Luca, speaking of the importance of an event such as Giffoni that trains the younger generations, wanted to touch on the environmental issue. “Giffoni is growing a non-ideological environmental culture. We need to protect the environment, we need to protect jobs, we need to protect solidarity.” “It is a complicated job to do, but we must also be confident because these events help us to increase these sensitivities.” “We are really proud to tell you that we are at the forefront precisely from the point of view of protection, for example of water heritage. We are the only region in Italy that has a plan for the region’s water autonomy, i.e. we are preparing for future decades with a plan to build twenty hilly reservoirs and a dam in Campolattaro. We have not had in recent years the problems of drought in Campania. But we need to know that this is a problem that we will face for the coming decades and therefore we need to prepare for it.”

Finally, the Chair invited girls and boys to “reason on the facts, i.e. to assess the information coming in, the facts and to form an opinion”. To favour humanity, without disdaining technology.

Finally, a reference to territorial cohesion. Speaking of differentiated autonomy, De Luca said he was addressing it with a ‘resurgent’ spirit, appealing to all the healthy forces in the country of the South as well as in the north.

Over the years, the Campania Region has invested numerous European resources, making it possible to create useful structures, most recently the Multimedia Valley, which have allowed Giffoni to be not just a festival, but a place for training and multimedia production capable of generating work and development 365 days a year. A final example of the institutions’ commitment was the ribbon-cutting of the new room of the Museo Testimoni del Tempo.

A building in which it will also be possible to view Giffoni’s immense audio-visual archive. In the short term, an arena for outdoor events will also be completed, while in the near future there is also a project to build a campus. A place where, with advanced training, the complex of structures and know-how built up over the decades will be perfected, definitively transforming the Giffoni Film Festival into a 360° experience in the world of cinema, digital and audiovisual in general.
