Other EU institutions and agencies in Italy
The European institutions are not only in Brussels, far from the citizens: EU institutions and agencies are hosted in member countries. In Italy, in addition to the European Commission Representation, there are:
The European University Institute of Fiesole (Florence): Its objective is to encourage the progress of learning in fields of particular interest to European development. The Institute offers important doctoral programmes (economics, law, political science, etc.), post-doctoral and master’s degrees in law, and hosts part of the EU Historical Archives. Website: www.eui.eu
the European Parliament Information Office (Rome and Milan offices): Its main task is to inform citizens about the activities of the European Parliament and its Members, facilitating contacts between citizens and their elected Assembly. Website: www.europarl.it
the Delegation of the European Union to the Holy See, the Order of Malta and the United Nations Organisations in Rome: Since 1993, it has been working mainly in the field of food and agriculture, linking its headquarters in Brussels, the 27 EU countries and the three specialised UN agencies in Rome (FAO, IFAD and WFP). Website: eeas.europa.eu/delegations/rome
the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Ispra (Varese): Its activities range from setting food safety standards to researching new energy technologies, to evaluating policy options, such as on climate change. Website: ec.europa.eu/dgs/jrc
the European Investment Bank: provides long-term loans to the public and private sectors to finance capital investment projects of particular interest to the European Union. The Rome office has existed since 1968 and has helped to strengthen the relationship with customers in Italy. Website: www.eib.org
The European Food Safety Authority, in Parma: It was established as an independent source of scientific advice and communication on risks associated with the food chain. Website: www.efsa.europa.eu
The European Training Foundation, in Turin: supports the reform of education and training systems in neighbouring regions such as the Balkans, North Africa, the Middle East and the former Soviet Union and helps some of these countries to develop citizens’ skills and knowledge to promote better living conditions, active citizenship and the consolidation of democratic societies.
