The area of interest, which covers a total area of 784.87 square kilometres, is bordered by 19 municipalities in the Province of Salerno, on the border between the Province of Avellino in the north and the Basilicata Region in the east, which together represent the Tanagro, Alburni and Alto e Medio Sele areas. Ben the 95% of the municipalities falls within the internal area, with the 26% They are identified as peripheral. This is a strategic area for the hinge function in relation to the pilot area of Alta Irpinia and Vallo di Diano and is enclosed by the Cilento Interno area.
The internal area is a unique territorial mosaic, characterised by an extraordinary diversity of production, culture, society, environment and landscape. In particular, the variety of economic activities is one of the distinctive elements of the territory, shaped by agricultural, craft, manufacturing, tourism and recreational activities.
However, this area is currently facing a number of challenges that require a rethinking of its development trajectories, with the aim of building a fairer, more sustainable and liveable future. Current challenges, many of which are closely interlinked, range from the increasingly evident effects of climate change – such as drought and the irregularity and intensity of rainfall – to the crisis of the mainstream development model, manifested through the depopulation of certain areas and the decline of specific production sectors.
To address these challenges, it is essential that local actors recognise these “breaking points” and turn them into opportunities for intervention and design. The main expected result is therefore the multisectoral integration of tourism, agriculture, crafts and cultural and environmental heritage enhancement practices through the construction of territorial networks capable of connecting the local to the regional, national and international level, strengthening the competitiveness of the area and making it a laboratory for social and economic innovation.
