Monteverde is a small medieval village located in the interior of Campania, on the border with Puglia and Basilicata, which is becoming a ‘Accessible country’. The aim is to offer tourists with visual, hearing and motor impairments a holiday that they can enjoy comfortably and independently.
Since 2006, the municipality of Monteverde has been the organiser and venue of the meeting of the different skills ‘An accessible country’. Thirteen editions during which citizens understood that, thanks to their great reception capacity, they could transform their country, avoid depopulation, create jobs and offer everyone, regardless of disability, the opportunity to spend a real holiday in one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
The idea has become a project and thanks to the European Funds of the Campania Region it is now becoming a reality.
Three paths have been created surrounded by greenery, completely digitalized and without barriers.
One of them climbs up to the medieval castle. Once you reach the fortress, the visit continues. Monteverde is the only castle in the world that can be used by the blind and deaf independently.
In the strategic points, network coverage hotspots have been positioned and 8,000 RFIDs allow, through reading with a special stick, to receive information on movements. Tactile maps will be placed, while, for those who request it, 4 motorized wheelchairs will be available.
A reception village is being built with bedrooms, restaurant, reception and recreational spaces that can be used by all types of guests, while for lovers of an en plein air holiday, a camper area complete with services has been built on the edge of the village.
Because in Monteverde accessibility is not an obligation, but a service to be offered to the customer.
