Presented ‘Il Faro’ of Campania. the new center of the Region will allow the urban regeneration of the railway areas and the intermodal node of Garibaldi going to constitute the new East door of Naples. Zaha Hadid's project is the first of five projects selected through an international competition.

The urban development project, presented by the President of the Campania Region, Vincenzo De Luca, will make it possible to create an iconic work of contemporary architecture in Italy that Italy lacks, orphaned of modern symbols of identity.

The project, as explained by the director of Hadid, Michele Pasca di Magliano, in addition to redeveloping an area of 150 000 square metres with 100 000 square metres equipped with greenery, will give the Campania Region a functional space with parking lots, a conference room, nurseries and commercial premises.  A modern, powerful and fascinating work, but compatible with the environment and integrated with the territory, which will also have the function of reconnecting the urban islands that surround it: the station, the historic center, the business center.

The project is therefore fully part of the New European Bauhaus, transforming the area concerned with the aim of making it more beautiful, sustainable and inclusive, also thanks to the quality of the work carried out by the Hadid study, as underlined by the Councillor for Urban Planning and the Government of the Campania Region, Bruno Discepolo.

As explained by the CEO of FS Sistemi Urbani, Umberto Lebruto, Naples and Campania will achieve another record through the project: to have the first fully intermodal hub. With three levels of rail transport (Metro, EAV, High Speed), one level on road, with the burial of the A3 belt, where private cars and bus terminals will converge, then the iron rubber exchange that could bring the surface level to be destined only for pedestrian and cycle traffic.

The project also provides for the coverage of the Vesuvius rail beam from Porta Nolana to Garibaldi. The work, as explained by the President of the EAV, Umberto De Gregorio, will lead to a redevelopment of the entire district, because finally the citizens of the district will no longer have any view of train tracks but a green boulevard. The project also has a transport aspect because the aim is to double the tracks of the Circumvesuviana in Piazza Garibaldi and to transform the Porta Nolana terminal into a train storage area.

Finally, when asked why he called the new headquarters of the Region ‘Il Faro’, Pasca di Magliano explained that, as the top floor is a lighted garden, it will always be visible at night. Just like a beacon for navigators looking for a landmark.
