How important are digital technologies in everyday life? What is our perception of European policy intervention to ensure a secure and accessible digital transformation? These are some of the questions contained in the new Eurobarometer survey on the European Digital Decade

According to the survey, 76% of Europeans believe that advanced connectivity and stronger cybersecurity will greatly improve the day-to-day use of digital technologies. Two thirds of Europeans are calling for more education and training to develop digital skills. Similarly, two thirds believe that digital technologies will play an important role in the fight against climate change. Finally, over 80% believes that Member States should work more closely together to advance access to digital technologies, stimulate innovation and develop a competitive market.

As regards value-based digital transformation, only half of Europeans believe that digital rights and principles are adequately protected in Europe. The 36% considers that more needs to be done and, as regards secure digital environments and the control of their data, less than half consider that the implementation of digital rights and principles in their country is satisfactory. In particular, Europeans are concerned about the protection of children and young people.

Within the framework of European Digital Decade, progress towards achieving the EU’s milestones and targets and implementing digital rights and principles will be measured annually. The analysis also includes reporting on multi-country projects that allow Member States to move forward together in the digital sector.
