Through the Cohesion Policy in Campania (POR Campania FESR 2014-2020) Integrated Sustainable City Programme PICS – City of Giugliano in Campania, an area of approximately 67,300 square metres has been redeveloped, including the archaeological site of the ancient Maritime Colony of Liternum founded by the Romans in Campania in 194 BC after the Second Punic War to fortify the coast by sending 300 families.
The refurbishment and enhancement project has transformed the archaeological site of Liternum into:
- Archaeo-naturalistic oasis of strong scenographic impact that will attract a varied audience both for age for social position and scientific-cultural-sporting interest
- Public garden for residents and non-residents,
- Educational path for schoolchildren
- Life path along the lake
- Attractor of Archaeological and Naturalistic Tourism.
- Among the building blocks of the project:
- pedestrian paths to guide the itinerary of the visit (3.5 km)
- 7 islands of archaeological observation
- 5 stopping points equipped with benches
- bird-watching facility for observation of the natural and lake environment
- pier mooring canoes • pedestrian bridges for crossing natural canals
- area for shows
- insertion of about 350 trees, 7,500 shrubs
The total amount of the works for the refurbishment and enhancement of the archaeological area of Liternum is €2 035.328.54, from the 2014-2020 Campania ERDF ROP – AXIS 10 ‘URBAN DEVELOPMENT’ – INTEGRATED PROGRAMME SUSTAINABLE CITY PICS – CITY OF GIUGLIANO IN CAMPANIA.
The PICS programme of the Giugliano in Campania Urban Authority provided for 10 interventions, with a total value of over EUR 10 million, which allowed, in addition to the arrangement and enhancement of the archaeological area of Liternum:
- the creation of 5 playgrounds
- the refurbishment and refurbishment of the green area annexed to the I Circolo didattica school in Piazza Gramsci and the creation of a playground
- the construction of spaces equipped for football activities and athletic training in via Pigna
- the creation of spaces equipped for recreational activities with games set-up area in front of the Gramsci middle school in via Epitaffio
- the creation of spaces equipped for recreational activities with games set up near the IV Educational Circle in via Ripuaria
- the recovery and re-functionalisation of the outdoor area of the property confiscated from the ‘former Villa Zagaria’ mafias to be used as a social and cultural gathering space with games
- the network of churches of culture: intervention to create a thematic network and to enhance and promote tourism
- The renovation of the part not affected by economic activities within the fruit and vegetable market to be allocated to community spaces and community activities in the neighbourhood
- the re-functionalisation of the former municipal cinema to be used as a gathering space and for cultural, social and entertainment activities
